Atro, Javanese Black Bamboo (Gigantochloa atroviolacea)
Atroviolacea means deep purple, and in a certain light the culms have a purple tinge, but mainly it's black. This is an impressive plant; very black culms with narrow white bands at the nodes and large leaves. The timber is black, strong, durable and beautiful. At 15 metres or so it is a medium size bamboo. Moderate winds and light frost seem to have little effect on it. Heavy frost will damage the plants, particularly new growth on late shoots. However, the plants recover quickly in spring and, as with other black bamboos, cold weather quickly blackens the new culms.
